DesignSeries00698.pngEditing materials

As with other Vectorworks resources, materials in the Vectorworks-provided libraries should not be edited; customization may be lost when these libraries are updated. However, you can edit a material within a file and save it to a user or workgroup library for future use; see Using resources in your drawing and Creating custom resource libraries. Likewise, to base a new material on a similar material already in a file, duplicate the original material and edit the copy.

When a material is edited, all components/objects in the file that use the material automatically update to reflect the changes. This includes compound materials if a simple material that is used in the compound material is edited. For example, if a simple mortar resource is used in different brick and stone compound materials, editing the mortar automatically updates every compound material that includes that mortar.

To edit a material resource:

Do one of the following:

To edit a simple material: From the Resource Manager, right-click on the material in the active file and select Edit from the context menu. Edit the material’s parameters as described in Defining a simple material.

This procedure applies to a simple material used on its own or to a simple material that is used only as part of a compound material. To edit a simple material that is used for multiple purposes, only some of which should change, see below.

To edit a compound material: From the Resource Manager right-click on the material in the active file and select Edit from the context menu. Edit the material’s elements as described in Defining a compound material.

All other material resource and components/objects in the file that use the edited material are automatically updated.
