Design SuiteAdding, merging, and editing phases

The Manage Phases dialog box manages all the phases in a file. You can insert a new phase before or after an existing phase, or merge one existing phase and its assigned objects into the phase immediately before or after it. Merging a phase removes it from the list without losing phase-related information for the objects assigned to that phase; objects are reassigned to the phase into which they're merged. Because the creation, removal, and reuse of many drawing objects may be connected to each phase, and the order of edits must be maintained, you cannot change the order of phases. Instead, you need to add and merge phases and/or change an object's phase assignments manually to achieve the desired result.

You may name phases anything that makes sense within your project; a phase's name is independent of an object's phase status.

Every Vectorworks file must have at least one phase, even if phasing isn't used for a project.

Viewing the phases

On the View bar, click Phasing Options  and select Manage Phases.

Alternatively, select View > Phasing > Manage Phases.

The Manage Phases dialog box opens and displays a list of the phases in the file, in chronological order.

Adding a phase

Open the Manage Phases dialog box.

Select an existing phase from the list.

Click Insert Before or Insert After, depending on where you need to add the phase.

The New Phase dialog box opens.

Enter the name and optionally the date and description of the new phase. If a date is entered, it must fall in the proper chronological order with other phases that have dates.

The new phase is added to the list in the order indicated.

Merging phases

Open the Manage Phases dialog box.

Click the phase to be merged into an adjacent phase and deleted from the list.

Click Merge with Previous or Merge with Next.

The selected phase is merged into the phase indicated, and the objects created, removed, or relocated in the merged phase are reassigned to the phase into which they're merged. Merges can be undone. If merging phases creates conflicts with object statuses, an alert provides options to resolve the conflicts.

Editing a phase

Open the Manage Phases dialog box.

Hover the cursor over the phase, and click the pen icon in the column to edit.

Edit the column data directly in the list. You can edit the date, but the new date must fall in the same chronological order of phases.
