Once the geometry of a plant definition symbol is established (see Creating Plant Geometry for the Plant Definition), you can set botanical data and other parameters for a plant definition, to prescribe the default settings for a specific type of plant.
To specify plant definition parameters:
Open the Edit Plant Definition dialog box using one of the following methods:
● To create a new plant definition based on the existing plant definition symbol, select the plant instance, and then select the Create New Plant command from the appropriate menu:
● Designer workspace: AEC > Plants > Create New Plant
● Landmark workspace: Landmark > Create New Plant
Alternatively, right-click on a plant instance (in the drawing) and select Create Plant from Object from the context menu.
● To add data to or edit an existing plant definition, right-click on a plant instance (in the drawing) and select Edit from the context menu. Then click Definition and click OK.
Alternatively, from the Resource Manager, right-click on the plant definition, and select Edit Definition from the context menu.
● From within the Plant Tool Preferences dialog box or the Plant Settings dialog box, click Edit Plant Definition from any pane to edit the current definition, or click Duplicate from the Definition pane to create a new plant definition based on the selected plant.
The Edit Plant Definition dialog box opens, displaying the selected plant definition symbol. Provide a name for the symbol if needed, and then specify the plant parameters on each pane to define the plant. As the parameters are defined, the preview dynamically displays the plant appearance. Each pane of the plant definition dialog box is described in the following sections.
Although the Plant Tool Preferences dialog box appears similar, preferences set there do not change the plant definition.
When the default plant parameters have been defined, click OK to close the Edit Plant Definition dialog box. If you accessed the dialog box from the Plant Tool Preferences or Plant Settings dialog box, clicking OK returns you to the original dialog box.
Plant definitions that have a corresponding plant database record automatically update the plant database to match any edits to the plant definition, if Update Plant Database with Vectorworks Plant Definition Changes is selected (see Concept: Plant Definition and Plant Database Integration).
Plant resources can be exported from the Resource Manager or by selecting Export Plant from the plant context menu; see Exporting Resources.
If you want to set plant Z values to the site model surface, the plant definitions and site model must be in the same file (they cannot be referenced).
Every pane of the plant definition displays the Plant Symbol Name and previews, allows botanical data to be obtained from the plant database, and provides the option to obtain the 2D and 3D plant geometry from a symbol. The previews update as the plant definition changes.
► Click to show/hide the parameters.
Specify the default insertion options for the plant definition on the Insertion Options pane.
If plant data were obtained from the plant database, the plant database values are displayed. Values and settings entered on this pane become the default for the plant definition.
► Click to show/hide the parameters.
Click the Schedule pane to specify default plant values for display and reporting.
If plant data were obtained from the plant database, the plant database values are displayed. Values and settings entered on this pane become the default for the plant definition.
► Click to show/hide the parameters.
Click the Render pane to specify the 2D plant styles. These effects display in Top/Plan view only; plant shadows do not display in worksheet images. A document preference makes it easy to give plans a uniform appearance by applying a document-wide shadow style to all plants and massing models in a drawing (see Document Preferences: Plan Shadows Tab). Even when a document preference is set, plant definitions can be edited on the Render pane to customize the drawing’s appearance. The outline, massing, and shadow parameters can be toggled for all plants in a document by selecting View > Show > Show or Hide Plant Styles.
Values and settings entered on this pane become the default for the plant definition. These default values can be changed for individual plants.
► Click to show/hide the parameters.
Click the Plant Data pane to view the additional plant information.
The plant data parameters are listed; each one can be clicked and its Value displays below the list. Click Edit to change the value.
To retrieve botanical data from the associated plant record in the plant database, click Get Plant Data as described in Plant Definition: General Options.
As described in Concept: Plant Definition and Plant Database Integration, if Update Plant Database with Vectorworks Plant Definition Changes is selected in the Choose Plant Database Location dialog box, the plant database is automatically updated with any changes made on the Plant Data pane.
If you are using a plant database file from a version of Vectorworks prior to 2018, the synchronization of images between the plant definition and the plant database cannot occur even when using the Migration Manager during the version update, because the older plant database file does not include the new functionality. To fix this issue, export the records in the plant database with the File > Export Records plant database command. Then import the records back into the plant database with the File > Import Records plant database command.
Up to four plant images can be selected from the Data pane. The images can be synchronized with the images in the plant database; see Editing Plant Records. The fourth option, Custom Image, is not populated by default in the plant database, so it is useful for including an additional graphic in the plant definition.
Other image sources, besides those from the plant database, can be specified from the Plant Data pane. If not using plant images from the plant definition or the plant database, prepare image files or create/locate a suitable image resource.
To set the plant data image source:
In the Plant Definition: Plant Data pane, scroll to the Image Plant Form, Image Detail, Image Misc, and Custom Image parameters.
Click on each one to set its image source. Set Image becomes available; click to specify the image for tag display.
The Set Plant Data Image dialog box opens. Specify the location of the plant image.
► Click to show/hide the parameters.
Click OK.
When an image source has been specified, <image> displays in the Value column of the Plant Data pane. The plant images are synchronized with the plant database. For this reason, the selection may change to Plant Database Image regardless of the original selection. For example, if you import an external file for the Image Detail, the plant database is updated with this image for the Detail Image. In the Set Plant Data Image dialog box, the setting switches to Plant Database Image since the image now originates from the database.
Prevent image and plant data synchronization between the plant database and the plant definition, if needed, by deselecting Update Plant Database with Vectorworks Plant Definition Changes (see Accessing the Plant Database).
Display images in the drawing within plant tags by Creating a Custom Plant Tag, and add them to worksheets by Inserting Images in Worksheet Cells.
