Editing devices, sockets, and adapters
Devices, sockets, and adapters are symbol definition resources, saved with the file or in the user folder and available from the Resource Manager. Vectorworks also provides default ConnectCAD resources with its libraries.
You can change the appearance of devices, sockets, and adapters. The ConnectCAD template contains sets of classes with names that clearly indicate their function. The classes can be edited to change the appearance, font style and color, etc., of various ConnectCAD objects for a customized look. The appearance of sockets and adapters can be customized if the default is not suitable.
You can also edit the device definition of Spotlight objects that connect to cables.
See Customizing ConnectCAD objects for more information about customizing devices, sockets, and adapters.
You can also renumber devices and sockets if needed; see Renumbering ConnectCAD objects.
Editing devices
Device parameters can be edited from the Object Info palette; see Placing a basic device or device symbol for parameter information.
You can edit devices and their sockets with the Device Builder dialog box. Click the Device tool and Device Builder mode, and then click on a device to display the dialog box; see Building a device.
Use the Resource Manager to edit device symbol definitions; see Editing symbol definitions. Any of the parameters from the Object Info palette can be edited while in the editing mode of the symbol definition. In addition, you can add graphics such as an image of the device, change the size of the device, or add colors, gradients, or other attributes to the device’s appearance to easily identify it, and so on. Add additional sockets to the device symbol definition if needed, or change the position of the sockets to prevent circuit cross-over in your drawings. To adjust the height of a device, select the device and drag its resize handle at the bottom of the device.
Editing devices associated with equipment and rack frames
Devices can be associated with equipment items and rack frames with the same name. If a device has an associated equipment item or rack frame defined, the device's make, model, physical data, and location data come from the equipment item or rack frame.
The associated device can be edited.
To edit a device associated with an equipment item or a rack frame:
Select an equipment item or a rack frame.
Select Show Schematic Device(s) from the Object Info palette (see Placing equipment and Placing a rack frame).
If the equipment item or rack frame has one associated device, the view navigates to display the device, which is automatically selected.
If the equipment item or rack frame has several associated devices on the same layer, all the devices display and they are automatically selected.
If the equipment item or rack frame has several associated devices on different layers, the Select Layer dialog box opens. Select the layer that contains the devices to edit.
Do one of the following:
Edit the parameter information from the Object Info palette.
Double-click on a device to open it in object editing mode (see Object editing mode), and edit the device.
Replacing connectors

Replace Connectors |
Context menu (Resource Manager) |
You can replace the connectors of a device symbol definition with a different connector type.
To replace the connector type for a device symbol definition:
In the Resource Manager, locate the symbol definition of the device (or any symbol with a Device Definition record attached).
Right-click on the symbol definition, and select the command from the context menu.
The Replace Connectors dialog box opens.
The Old Connector list displays the available connections present on the device. Select the connector to be replaced; enter text in the search box to filter the list.
Select the replacement connector from the New Connector list; enter text in the search box to filter the list.
If the replacement connector conflicts with the device symbol's internal wiring, the internal wiring is deleted. Specify new internal wiring as described in Editing distributors.
Editing the device definition data
Device definition records contain all of the data necessary to define device types. Advanced users can edit the default data for a device by right-clicking on its 3D symbol from the Resource Manager and selecting Edit Device Definition from the context menu. This editing capability applies to ConnectCAD devices as well as Spotlight objects with an attached ConnectCAD Device Definition record.
Device definition record formats are always attached only to the 3D symbol definition of a device.
To edit the default data of a device symbol definition:
Right-click on a 3D device symbol definition in the Resource Manager, and then select Edit Device Definition.
The Edit Device Definition dialog box opens. The parameters are identical to the parameters in the Device Builder dialog box, although some parameters are not available (see Building a device).
Edit information about the device and its sockets.
Because Device Identification parameters define device types, and Enter device physical details parameters are preset to the size of symbol definitions, those parameters cannot be changed.
Do one of the following:
Save the edits to the default data by clicking Save.
Save the edits to the default data, and then enter editing mode to modify the internal wiring of the device by clicking Save and Enter Internal Wiring. This is a similar operation to selecting the Edit Internal Wiring context command as described in Editing distributors.
Editing the device definition record does not change existing symbol instances.
When the device definition record is edited, the Category and Type values are added to the symbol definition as resource tags (see Searching for a resource and Adding and editing resource tags). If the resource tags already exist and the values are changed, the tags are updated. The tags make it easier to search for the symbol in the Resource Manager later.
