Doors, windows, and assemblies can be inserted by clicking within the drawing; this method uses all the object's preferences, including the height and width settings.

Alternatively, to place an object by drawing it manually to set the location and overall dimensions, see Drawing doors, windows, and assemblies. To create an assembly from existing doors and windows, or from a closed 2D shape, see Creating a door and window assembly from existing objects.

To insert a door, window, or assembly:

Click the tool and the appropriate insertion and alignment modes; see Creating doors, windows, and assemblies.

Do one of the following:

Click [Object] Style on the Tool bar to select a resource from the Resource Selector.

Individual manufacturer catalog items cannot be selected using the Resource Manager; see Concept: Plug-in object styles and catalog items

Click Preferences to open the object preferences dialog box and specify the tool’s default parameters; see Door settings, Window settings, or Door and window assembly settings.

The parameters can be edited later from the Object Info palette.

Move the cursor to the insertion location; when Wall Insertion mode is on, walls highlight as the cursor is over them, indicating the object can be inserted. For doors and windows in a wall, a preview displays with handing indicators to set the object's orientation in the wall, and indicating the object's interior side for reference. See Interactive handing of doors and windows for more information about the visual handing cues. If an object is inserted outside a wall, the orientation previews, but the handing indicators do not display.

Assembly objects don't have handing indicators, but selected doors and windows within an assembly do. An assembly has a single interior side indicator that applies to all objects in the assembly.

Click to set the insertion point of the object.

Move the cursor to insert the object with the needed orientation, and click again to place it. The handing-related parameters are set to match the door/window as drawn.

The orientation of a door/window inserted in a wall can be changed later with the Selection tool and handing indicators.

Several features of the object, including trim, some frame and threshold settings, and so on, are described as "interior" or "exterior." These elements are located based on the Interior Side setting on the object preferences General pane.

Optionally, create a style resource from an unstyled object (see Custom plug-in object styles with catalog options).
